Promise of pies draws almost 900 runners

IPSWICH — Run For The Pies was back with a vengeance this year as 870 runners showed up at Town Hall on Thanksgiving morning to burn off pre-meal calories … and perhaps win a pie from Russell Orchards.

Organized by the Ipswich YMCA, the annual fun run benefited the Y’s financial assistance programs and the Dinner Bell.

“It’s a great bounce-back,” said organizer Farrah Dube-Parent of the Ipswich Y. “It’s a first out for some, and it’s a first back for many,” she said.

Two races were held. The first was a 1.2-mile fun run for children, and each participating child received an individual Table Talk pie. The second race was 2.8 miles long and started half an hour later. It was supposedly for adults, but a lot of older kids bunched up at the starting line to take part. Every tenth person crossing the finish line received a ready-to-bake treat from Russell Orchards.

“You have your serious runners. They’re out to get first place,” Dube-Parent said. “The rest are here for fun.”
