Letter: Thank you from Ipswich Humane Group

To the editor:

Since its founding in 1982, the Ipswich Humane Group (IHG) has never experienced a year like 2020. Our shelter closed its doors in March due to COVID-19 restrictions, and all the animals were placed in foster care until the re-opening this fall.

We are grateful to all the foster care volunteers who provided a home for these animals that otherwise would have had no place to go during this period.

Thank you to our community for their continued financial support during this difficult year. This support enabled us to help Destiny, a chihuahua with one amputated leg. She incurred a fracture in another leg that required extensive surgery to be saved. Fortunately, the IHG was able to intervene and provide funds for this needed surgery. She was placed in foster care with a loving family, who then adopted her.

While our shelter was closed, we were able to help a rescue group with a dog hoarding situation. Thanks to a collaborative effort between us, our animal control officer, and Rescue Inc., we cared for 18 dogs until they all were placed in foster homes or were adopted — a sad situation that ended well for the dogs.

Because of the virus, our fundraising this year was dramatically altered. We were forced to forego the annual Tree Jubilee, our major fundraiser held in December at Marini Farm.

As always, the Marini’s came through to help by allowing us to use their farm store for the raffle of one “mega tree,” which included a $1,000 prize. They also included us in the popular Doggy Maze Daze event in September.  Many thanks to the Marinis!

A special thank you to the Gloucester Bank, which included us in their annual Banking for the Community program and then presented us with a $2,000 grant.

Thank you to Muddy Creek Animal Care Center, who again this year included us in their annual “Photos with Santa” fundraiser. And to St. John’s Prep Animal Welfare Club, which held a drive-by fundraiser in December and dropped off two carloads of needed supplies for our shelter.

We greatly appreciate the following veterinary clinics for their dedication and medical support throughout the past year: Topsfield Veterinary Hospital, SRH, Muddy Creek Animal Care Center, Ipswich Animal Hospital, and Animal Care.

We also thank all the other individuals, businesses, families, and friends who continue to support the IHG in many ways every day of the year!

Due to COVID, we have not yet resumed our Sunday open house, but shelter animals can be viewed by appointment.

If you are interested in volunteering, we need foster care volunteers, particularly for cats. For more information, please go to our website at  www.ipswichhumanegroup.org or our Facebook page. Donations can be made through our website or by mail to Ipswich Humane Group, P.O.
